    ABOUT THE CLASS

This Level I Absolute Beginner course is especially tailored to those students who have had no formal instruction in Hawaiian sentence patterns and terminology. You should also choose this level even if you have been using Duolingo or a similar app to learn phrases and vocabulary, especially if that has been your only exposure to learning ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi.

We will cover all of the important building blocks needed to start reading, writing, and communicating in ʻŌlelo including:

    • The Hawaiian alphabet and pronunciation
    • Basic reading skills
    • An overview of the “Pepeke” Hawaiian-language model used to describe phrase and sentence patterns
    • The four basic Pepeke phrase patterns (locational Pepeke Henua, stative Pepeke Painu ʻAʻano, and two action phrases – Pepeke Painu Hamani and Pepeke Painu Hehele).
    • Hawaiian pronouns (papani)
    • Single-word modifiers (kāhulu memeʻa)
    • Numbers (helu)
    • Telling time on the hour
    • Asking questions: what, who, and how many?
    • Talking about things in the past, present, and future
    • Giving commands and suggestions, including “should/must/need to”

    LEVEL CHANGES

We prefer to keep things simple!

If you need to cancel your attendance completely, please contact Noe Norman at [ mcnorman@ksbe.edu ].

If you wish to change to another level after the Session has begun, just let us know, and we'll get you set up in the class that fits your needs best. The Absolute Beginner class may seem very easy for the first week or two for those with some familiarity with ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi; but the class moves quickly, and it won't be long before you'll be glad you stayed.

If you are further than two weeks into the Session and wish to drop or otherwise have an issue, please contact us, and we can evaluate on a case-by-case basis.
