ABOUT THE CLASS
For those of you who can already understand and produce spoken and written ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi when used in simple and familiar contexts, then this KSH Papa Lau will be your level. At a minimum, you should be able to speak in short sentences with slow and deliberate cadence. The goal will be allowing you to understand and produce more fluid and lengthy sentences.
Since we do not know ahead of time the level of the students who will be attending this course, the content will be adjusted to match the average level of those attending.
Items of instruction may consist of the following items, as examples:
- Advanced Pepeke phrase patterns
- Combining of multiple Pepeke into complex sentences
- High-level A-class and O-class possession
- Advanced kāhulu modifiers including “kāhulu pepeke”
- Passive vs active voice practice and conversion
- Directionals for storytelling/narrative use
- Special verbal elements (kuʻa) for paragraph-length narration and writing
- Advanced ʻawe prepositional phrases
- High-level use of locational nouns (iʻoahenua)
- Pepeke Makua, Pepeke Keiki (dependent clauses)
- Advanced “while”, “when”, and “whenever” patterns
- Correction of common errors found in mid-level to advanced speakers
- Loaʻa, Lilo, Maopopo, and command structures at advanced level
- Modeling native speakers from the mid-1900s
- Hands-on practice with transcriptions and translations
- Recognition and use of Hawaiian prosody
- High-level use of all topics from Levels I and II
- …and more, depending on the level of students attending
LEVEL CHANGES
We prefer to keep things simple!
If you need to cancel your attendance completely, please contact Noe Norman at [ mcnorman@ksbe.edu ].
If you wish to change to another level after the Session has begun, just let us know, and we'll get you set up in the class that fits your needs best. The Papa Lau "speaker" level will certainly contain materials that are meant to stretch and strengthen your abilities in ʻŌlelo, but don't feel bad at all if you want to step back into a "Continuing Development" class, because as they say «ʻO ke kahua ka mua; ma hope ke kūkulu» — the foundation has to come first and following that, the building.
If you are further than two weeks into the Session and wish to drop or otherwise have an issue, please contact us, and we can evaluate on a case-by-case basis.
