ABOUT THE CLASS

This Level II Continuing Development course is especially tailored to those students who have been through the Beginner Foundations class or equivalent. Students beginning at this level should be able to communicate short messages on predictable, everyday topics using simple sentences, isolated words, and/or memorized phrases.

The goal is to have you improve in creating with the language by recombining learned patterns and vocabulary to express your own ideas in simple sentence-level language.

Items of instruction may consist of the following items, as examples:

  • Refinement and practice of knowledge from the Beginner Foundations level
  • Pepeke ʻAike He (class-inclusion pattern)
  • Pepeke ʻAike ʻO (equational pattern)
  • Using numbers both as kaʻi determiners and kāhulu modifiers
  • The five basic ʻawe (prepositional phrase) types
  • Possession in ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi: a-class vs o-class
  • Possession: Preposed and Postposed types
  • Directionals (hunekuhi) for general conversation
  • Telling time in more detail
  • Saying that something is on top, underneath, in front, behind, etc. (iʻoahenua)
  • Asking basic questions (what, who, how many, which, etc)
  • Practice and application of tense/aspect markers (māka painu)
  • Adding Pepeke and parts of Pepeke together using conjunctions and markers
  • Improved Hawaiian prosody (intonation, rhythm, etc)
  • …and more, depending on the level of students attending and/or progress made

LEVEL CHANGES

We prefer to keep things simple!

If you need to cancel your attendance completely, please contact Noe Norman at [ mcnorman@ksbe.edu ].

If you wish to change to another level after the Session has begun, just let us know, and we'll get you set up in the class that fits your needs best. The Continuing Development class may seem hard at first for some, since there will be students of various levels mixed together, but kumu Kaliko will balance instruction to meet all of your needs, so you might want to consider staying for the first couple of weeks to be sure about moving.

If you are further than two weeks into the Session and wish to drop or otherwise have an issue, please contact us, and we can evaluate on a case-by-case basis.
